Characteristics of gait in stepping over obstacles

چکیده

Human gait is precisely and continuously adapted in order to negotiate obstacles safely and without excessive modulations to lower limb trajectories. To investigate obstacle clearance, unimpaired healthy adult subjects (6 male and 6 female) were videotaped stepping over an obstacle adjusted to IO%, 25%. and 40% of leg length. Lead foot clearance was relatively uninfluenced by obstacle height whereas trail clearance increased systematically. As height increased the lead foot crossed earlier in the normalised stride but crossing distance remained at about 80% of normalised stride length. Trail foot clearance increased with height while crossing time was unchanged. Discussion of these findings focussed on a motor control process in which information from the visually-guided lead foot might be used to control trail foot trajectory. Motion of the whole body's center of mass when stepping over obstacles of different heights.

Tripping over obstacles and imbalance during gait were reported as two of the most common causes of falls in the elderly. Imbalance of the whole body during obstacle crossing may cause inappropriate movement of the lower extremities and result in foot-obstacle contact. Thus, this study was performed to investigate the effect of obstacle height on the motion of the whole body's center of mass (C...

Gaze strategies for avoiding obstacles: Differences between young and elderly subjects.

Visual input is highly relevant for safely stepping over obstacles. In this study, gaze-behaviour was investigated in elderly, middle-aged and young subjects as they walked on a treadmill repeatedly stepping over obstacles, which approached either on the right or left side. In between obstacle-steps, subjects visually fixated a target N or F located two or four steps ahead on the floor, respect...

Assessing gait adaptability in people with a unilateral amputation on an instrumented treadmill with a projected visual context.

BACKGROUND Gait adaptability, including the ability to avoid obstacles and to take visually guided steps, is essential for safe movement through a cluttered world. This aspect of walking ability is important for regaining independent mobility but is difficult to assess in clinical practice. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to investigate the validity of an instrumented treadmill with...

Stepping over obstacles: attention demands and aging.

Older adults have been shown to trip on obstacles despite taking precautions to step carefully. It has been demonstrated in dual-task walking that age-related decline in cognitive and attentional mechanisms can compromise postural management. This is yet to be substantiated during obstacle negotiation when walking. Forty-six healthy volunteers (aged 20-79 years) stepped over obstacles in their ...

Longitudinal changes in transtibial amputee gait characteristics when negotiating a change in surface height during continuous gait.

BACKGROUND Negotiating a raised surface during continuous gait is an important activity of daily living and is a potentially hazardous task with regards to trips, falls and fall-related injury. However, it is not known how recent transtibial amputees adapt to performing stepping gait tasks in the 6-month period following discharge from rehabilitation. METHODS Recent transtibial amputees perfo...
